Our Governance

Our church is a self-governing, democratic community. The Unitarian Universalist Association offers helpful resources, but it does not make decisions for our congregation. We make our own decisions through the democratic process.

Organizational Structure

Members
The ultimate authority in our church is our members. In open congregational meetings, voting members use parliamentary procedure to elect officers, approve the annual budget, and make other major decisions. At least two such meetings are held each year.

Board of Trustees
Church members elect a Board of Trustees to manage the business of the church. The board has 13 members and meets monthly. Church members and friends are welcome to attend board meetings and are encouraged to read the meeting minutes.

Committees
The day-to-day work of the church is carried out by various committees. The board approves committee charges and appoints committee chairs. Any member or friend of the church may join a committee.

Coordinating Council
The chairs of all committees form the Coordinating Council, which meets monthly. At these meetings, committee chairs update one another, review the church calendar, and collaborate on common issues. The Coordinating Council also serves as an incubator for creative ideas to enhance church life.

Bylaws

Our church is a nonprofit corporation. Our bylaws define our basic governing procedures, such as how one becomes a voting member and when elections are held. Download our bylaws.

As We Grow

Our church is growing, and growth brings change. We are adapting our organizational structure as we grow.
  • Churches our size are most effective when leadership is spread among many people rather than resting mainly with the minister. This approach is called the program church model. We already operate this way in many respects, but continue to work toward more fully becoming a program church.
  • A committee called the Governance Group is exploring questions such as "What types of issues should our board focus on?" Any recommendations for major changes will be brought to the congregation for approval.
